When should I book my newborn Session

One of the questions I’m asked almost daily is:

“When should I book my newborn photos?”

And honestly, the answer is usually much earlier than most parents think.

As a Perth newborn photographer, I often receive enquiries from families whose baby has already arrived, and while I always do my best to fit them in, booking during pregnancy gives you the best chance of securing a session around your baby’s arrival.

The Best Time to Book Your Newborn Session

The ideal time to book your newborn photography session is during your second trimester, or by around 20–30 weeks pregnant.

At this stage, you’ve usually had your anatomy scan, you’re starting to prepare for baby’s arrival, and it gives us plenty of time to reserve space in my calendar around your due date.

Because babies rarely arrive exactly when they’re expected to, I don’t book newborn sessions on a specific day months in advance. Instead, I reserve a place around your due date and finalise your session once baby arrives.

This allows flexibility while still ensuring you have a spot secured.

When Are Newborn Photos Taken?

For sleepy, curled-up newborn images, the ideal age is usually between 7–14 days old.

During this time, babies tend to sleep more deeply, settle more easily, and are naturally comfortable in those beautiful curled positions that parents often love.

That being said, every baby is different.

I’ve photographed newborns at a few days old, a few weeks old, and even older babies who simply needed a different approach.

If your baby has already arrived and you’re worried you’ve missed the window, please don’t panic. It’s always worth reaching out.

What If My Baby Arrives Early?

This is one of the biggest reasons I encourage parents to book during pregnancy.

Babies have their own plans.

Some arrive weeks early, some arrive late, and some make dramatic entrances when nobody is quite ready.

By booking ahead, I can adjust your session date based on when your baby actually arrives rather than trying to squeeze you into an already full calendar after birth.

Why Booking Early Matters

As a newborn photographer in Perth’s southern suburbs, I intentionally limit the number of newborn sessions I take each week.

Newborn photography isn’t rushed.

Sessions are completely baby-led, allowing time for feeding, cuddles, settling, nappy changes and everything else that comes with a brand-new baby.

Because of this, availability can become limited, particularly during busy seasons.

Booking early gives you peace of mind knowing your session is already organised before the sleepless nights begin.

What Happens After You Book?

Once you’ve secured your session, I’ll guide you through everything.

You’ll receive information about:

  • What to wear
  • How to prepare siblings
  • What to bring
  • How the session flows
  • When to feed baby before arriving
  • What to expect on the day

My goal is to make the entire experience feel relaxed and easy.

You don’t need to know how to pose your baby.

You don’t need a perfectly settled newborn.

And you definitely don’t need to stress about how your toddler will behave.

I’ve got you.

Studio Newborn Photography in Perth

My newborn sessions take place in my private Oakford studio in Perth’s southern suburbs.

The studio has been designed specifically for newborns and growing families, creating a calm, comfortable environment where you can simply sit back and enjoy the experience.

Sessions focus on natural, timeless imagery that won’t date in years to come.

Alongside individual newborn portraits, I also include family photographs, sibling images, parent connections and all those tiny details that change so quickly in the first few weeks of life.

Ready to Book?

If you’re currently expecting and considering newborn photography in Perth, my recommendation is simple:

Book while you’re pregnant.

It removes the stress, secures your place in my calendar, and means one less thing to think about once your little one arrives.

Whether you’re welcoming your first baby or your fifth, these early days pass incredibly quickly.

One day you’ll be wondering how they ever fit in your arms.

And you’ll be so grateful you took the time to preserve it.
